  Athletics: Gardener clinches gold
Updated 05 March 2004, 20.29
Jason Gardener
Jason Gardener won Britain's first gold of the World Indoors with a brilliant run in the men's 60m.

His awesome 6.49 second time put the Bath Bullet ahead of main rival Shawn Crawford to become the first Briton to win the indoor sprint crown.

Gardener said: "I'm very pleased to be world champion... at last, as there was a lot of pressure on me."

In the women's event, American Gail Devers comfortably took gold with a time of 7.08 seconds.

She said: "I'm pumped up for the hurdles now."

Gardener's win beat Britain's previous best at the championship, Linford Christie's silver in 1991.
