Sailor beats round the world mark
Updated 03 February 2004, 15.06
Francis Joyon
A Frenchman has become the fastest person to sail solo around the world, completing the journey in 72 days, 22 hours, 54 minutes and 22 seconds.

Francis Joyon finished the voyage more than 20 days faster than the old record holder, Michel Desjoyeaux.

Joyon sailed from Brittany in France on 21 November last year, and 26,000 miles later ended back there on Tuesday.

Normally 10 people are needed to crew the boat, but Joyon did it all on his own, without stopping once.

It wasn't easy for Joyon, who had to battle tough weather at Cape Horn and in the Southern Ocean, and even a damaged boat at one point.

The fastest ever round-the-world voyage is 64 days, 8hr 37min, but there were 15 people crewing that boat.

When Britain's Ellen MacArthur sailed around the world in 2001 she became the youngest person and the fastest woman to sail around the globe.
