Shark bite girl keeps on surfing
Updated 12 January 2004, 11.22
Bethany Hamilton
A 13-year-old surf champion who lost her arm in a shark attack has climbed back onto her board just 10 weeks after the terrible incident.

Bethany Hamilton, who was the top rated female surfer of her age in the US, pledged that she would "get back in the water" after the attack.

She managed to come fifth in the Open Women Division in Hawaii, with no help.

Bethany said: "Once I get up on the board, I'm OK... just sometimes it's hard to get there."

Doctors think that she should soon be able to do a lot more.

They said that with a prosthetic arm, she could soon be "doing 95% of what she wants to do."

Bethany hasn't let it get her down. She said: "I'm really excited and I'm not afraid of any sharks."
