  Solo windsurfer sets ocean record
Updated 04 November 2003, 18.10
Raphaela Le Gouvello on her windsurf
A French woman has made history by being the first person to windsurf across the Pacific Ocean alone.

Raphaela Le Gouvello spent 89 days making the journey in her specially built windsurfer, before finally landing in Tahiti on Monday.

She sailed the 8,200km on a board that was only 7.8m long.

In this space she had to eat and live. She managed to keep dry in bed by sleeping in a special water-proof capsule built into the board.

Sea-sick and lonely

Her journey
Raphaela set sail from Peru nearly three months ago.

To complete the journey in that time she had to sail for around eight hours a day, and during some of that time she said she felt really sea-sick and lonely.

But it was worth is as Raphaela now has a hat trick - she's already completed solo crossings of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
