Rugby: England fined for 16th man
Updated 30 October 2003, 16.46
Iain Balshaw celebrates an England try
England's rugby team has been fined £10,000 for having an extra man on the pitch in their win against Samoa.

Towards the end of the match, winger Dan Luger came on briefly while centre Mike Tindall was lying on the floor.

Tindall was being helped by a doctor, but for a while England had 16 players on the pitch instead of the allowed 15 and may have had points taken away.

But that didn't happen so England's place in the quarter-finals is safe, probably against Wales.

England's fitness coach Dave Reddin has also been punished for his part in the incident, getting a two-match ban from the touchline.

His punishment is for ignoring the fourth official's instructions, which may have been not to send Luger onto the field before being told it was OK.

Luger was only on the field for 34 seconds, in the second minute of injury time, with England leading 35-22 - which may have explained why England didn't get more than a fine.
