Rugby in crisis despite World Cup
Updated 20 October 2003, 20.20
England in action
Rugby fans are hoping the World Cup will reverse a trend where kids have been snubbing the sport in favour of other school activities.

The biggest World Cup in the history of rugby is in full swing in Australia, with England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland tipped to do well.

Research has shown that the sport ranks 15th among school sports, with dance proving more popular with kids.

The number of senior school pupils doing the sport has dropped 11% to 28%.

The Rugby Football Union has put together a three-point plan to get more people playing the game.

It wants to:

  • Rebuild the game in schools by training teachers to coach the sport and forming links between schools and rugby clubs.

  • Improve coaching standards at rugby clubs.

  • Focus on less traditional versions of the game (for example, sevens and touch rugby) for people who are put off by playing 15-a-side.

A scheme has also been set up to link some of the UK's biggest rugby stars with specific counties, so that kids have someone to look up to.
