  F1: Schumacher takes title record
Updated 12 October 2003, 11.45
Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello
He might have only come eighth, but that got Michael Schumacher his sixth Grand Prix championship title.

It earned the one point he needed to become the most successful driver in the history of the sport.

The Japanese Grand Prix saw Kimi Raikonnen, Schumi's only threat, come in second place.

Schumacher's team mate, Rubens Barrichello, started in pole and won the race, giving Ferrari the constructor's championship title.

Close race

The race was close, and Schumacher looked in danger as he damaged his wing trying to pass Takuma Sato on lap six.

He had another near miss, with his brother Ralf, in lap 41.

Schumacher broke the record of five championships that he shared with Argentine legend Juan Manuel Fangio.
