But Eddie O'Sullivan's team were made to work for their bonus point as Romania came back strongly in the second half.

Shane Horgan and Keith Wood helped the Irish to a 26-0 lead at half time. Denis Hickie and Victor Costello added to the score which got them the extra point.

Strong performance

Romania put in a strong performance after the break, and Valentin Maftei managed to pierce the Irish defence to get a try in the closing minutes of the game.

Ireland may have got the extra point, but there was a down side as captain Keith Wood was injured on the hour, and had to limp off.

Fiji 18-61 France
Yannick Jauzion scored a hat-trick to give France an easy victory over the Fijians.

The game had started slowly, with both sides trading penalties, until Api Naevo opened the try scoring for Fiji.

The game was quite open for a while, and France were forced to rely on Frederic Michalak's penalty scoring skill to keep on top.

But the French soon took the advantage, with tries from Christophe Dominici, Imanol Harinordoquy and Raphael Ibanez.
