Rugby: Australia start with World Cup win
Updated 10 October 2003, 14.28
Australia have won the first game of the tournament
Australia 24-8 Argentina
Australia opened their World Cup defence with a solid win against Argentina, although may have suffered a heavy price.

Key forward David Giffin was taken off the pitch in the second half after suffering what looked like a very bad neck injury.

Winger Wendall Sailor made the breakthrough for the Wallabies in the first half, using all his strength to score the first try of the tournament.

Argentina were able to cross the line themselves in the second half through Ignacio Corleto, before Joe Roff scored Australia's second try soon after.

Poor kicking from Argentinean fly-half Felipe Contemponi cost his side lots of points, and meant Australia were never really under pressure.

Their kicker Elton Flatley was much more accurate, kicking all four penalties and a conversion, only missing once from the touchline with a conversion.
