Formula One: Schumacher close to title
Updated 29 September 2003, 07.36
Michael Schumacher is close to taking the driver's championship
Michael Schumacher is close to making Formula One history after winning a rainy US Grand Prix in Indianapolis.

The Ferrari driver was a comfortable winner of the race, and now needs only a point from the final race of the season to take the driver's world championship.

Only one driver - McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen - can pip Schumacher to the title, but he must win the Japanese Grand Prix to have a chance.

Even if the Finn does so, an eighth place finish for Schumacher in Japan will clinch a sixth driver's championship - something no one else has ever done.

Raikkonen finished second behind Schumacher in the US, and lies nine points behind the German in the championship.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Sauber was third, taking full advantage of the good wet weather tyres his team had, which were the same as those on Schumacher's Ferrari.
