The trainer that lasts for 62 miles
Updated 11 August 2003, 10.45
The Mayfly doesn't last as long as other trainers
A new trainer has been designed that only lasts for 62 miles before wearing out.

They've been made by Nike, and are a third the weight of normal running shoes, which is why they wear out so quickly.

It's been invented to help out runners looking for that little bit extra when they race, because the lighter the shoe, the less effort is needed.

The shoes are also the first pair to be recyclable when they're worn out, with Nike asking people to send them back when they're finished with.

Cheaper than normal trainers

Then the company will grind down the soles of the trainers, called the Mayfly, and use the bits to make things like basketball courts and running tracks.

Because they don't last as long as other pairs the Mayfly trainers aren't as expensive, with each pair costing £25 to buy.
