  Woman breaks free diving record
Updated 22 July 2003, 09.52
Tanya Streeter celebrates breaking the world record
A woman has shattered the world's free diving record by going down a whopping 122 metres under the sea.

Tanya Streeter spent an incredible three minutes and 38 seconds underwater, with no breathing apparatus or help.

Free diving is a very difficult and dangerous sport. Sometimes people can die trying to set this record.

Lungs

When you go that deep under water without an oxygen tank, all sorts of things happen to your body.

  • Your lungs are shrunk by the water pressure
  • Your heart-rate drops to as low as 60 beats per minute

Tanya, 30, comes from West Sussex but was born in the Cayman Islands.

'Hard target'

She beat both the men's and women's record for free diving.

Tanya had to train for months before doing this dive.

"I'm really happy," she said afterwards. "But my greater emotion is relief because I set myself a very hard target with this dive."

Tanya said she had no plans to break the world record again, but she'd wait and see if anyone could beat her.
