Man Utd boss demands more school sports
Updated 16 May 2003, 14.53
Sir Alex says there aren't enough school sports lessons
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has taken a swipe at school sports lessons, saying kids aren't getting enough of them.

Fergie reckons many kids don't have "basic athletic skills".

He says your education isn't complete if you haven't had decent PE lessons.

"We have got to get sport back into our schools," he warned.

Weighty problem

Fergie's comments come as worries are increasing about kids being unhealthy and overweight.

Government figures show the amount of physical activity done in schools has dropped by 70% in the past 30 years.

A tussle on the football pitch

Young people exercise for less than 90 minutes in a week on average and around 10% of British kids are obese - which means they're seriously overweight.

A lot of people blame this on kids being more interested in playing computer games and watching TV.

Fergie also reckons there are problems with teachers having to give up their spare time to run school sports teams.

A recent survey showed just seven per cent of kids had played in school sports teams.

Many teachers focus on lessons like English and maths, so PE often gets left out.
