London will bid for the 2012 Olympics
Updated 15 May 2003, 13.24
London could host the 2012 Olympics
Great Britain is hoping to host the 2012 Olympics in London, the government have announced.

The Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell told the Commons on Wednesday that the government are backing a bid.

She said that the Prime Minister has telephoned the head of the Olympics, Jacques Rogge, to tell him of the British bid.

The Games are held every four years

We'll find if London will be the host in July 2005
Should the British bid be successful it would see London host the Paralympics too.

The Games were last held here in 1948, although the country has unsuccessfully bid to host the them lots of times since then.

A 2012 Olympic bid has been rumoured for a while, and at the start of the year the government were supposed to discuss it, but the war in Iraq delayed that.

The bidding process takes a long time, and other cities are also hoping to host the Games, including New York, Leipzig in Germany, Havana in Cuba and perhaps Paris and Madrid.

The success of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester last year has made the idea of hosting the Olympics much more popular.

But it will be really expensive, with the government saying it could cost as much as 2.375bn to get everything ready in time, including a new 80,000 athletics stadium in east London.
