Ferrero sweeps to French Open victory
Updated 08 June 2003, 19.17
Ferrero celebrates his win
Spanish tennis star Juan Carlos Ferrero has swept to victory in the French Open with a straight sets defeat of unseeded Dutchman Martin Verkerk.

The second seed took his first Grand Slam title by beating Verkerk 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

"Today is one of the most special days of my life," he said after lifting the trophy.

Ferrero is congratulated by Verkerk

Verkerk, who had never won a Grand Slam match coming into the tournament, said: "I never expected to be here and I can only say that Juan Carlos deserved to win and I am happy for him."

Dominated

Ferrero dominated the game from the outset, taking the first set in 31 minutes.

Verkerk seemed overwhelmed by the occasion and failed to show much of the form which won him a place in the final.

Heaviest defeat

He put up a better fight in the second set, but Ferrero was always in control in the third.

The result turned out to be the heaviest defeat in a French Open men's final in 25 years.
