Football girls give netball the boot
Updated 17 March 2003, 14.58
Loads more girls are playing football
Football is kicking netball into touch as the fave sport of girls.

The English Football Association says that they have 61,000 players on their books while there are only 55,000 registered netballers.

And if you include the number of girls playing football just for fun, almost 1.5m are currently taking part in the sport.

And the number of schoolgirls playing has gone through the roof, with 40,000 more playing the game than 10 years ago.

Beckham boost

Films like Bend It Like Beckham have made the game more popular, as has the first ever professional women's football team - Fulham Ladies.

In the past some girls who played football got called names because it was thought to be a sport just for boys, but now that's not the case.

In the US there is a professional league for women's football, and girls who are really good at football can get a scholarship to play the sport.
