England

Capital - London
Population - 49, 495,000
Watch out for - Dwain Chambers (100m)

England traditionally dominate the medal tables along with Australia and Canada.

They were second overall in 1998, collecting a total of 36 golds across a range of sports after sending 357 athletes, the most by any nation.



Northen Ireland

Capital - Belfast
Population - 1,663,000
Watch out for - Holly Murdock (gymnastics)

Their team of 98 in 1998 brought back two gold medals, taking their total to 22 in a wide variety of sports.

They triumphed in the fullbore rifle pairs and lawn bowls fours in Kuala Lumpur but also have a proud record in athletics and boxing with Mary Peters and Barry McGuigan among the stars of the past.



Scotland

Capital - Edinburgh
Population - 5,120,000
Watch out for - Alison Sheppard (50m swimming)

The Scots have been at every Games and have hosted the event twice in 1970 and 1986.

They have won 271 medals in all, 65 of them gold, with three coming in 1998.

Last time around, Scotland grabbed gold in boxing and lawn bowls, as well as in squash through Peter Nicol, who will compete this year for England.



Wales

Capital - Cardiff
Population - 2,920,000
Watch out for - Christian Malcolm (100m)

Ever-present since 1930, Wales have picked up 40 gold medals in total as part of their tally of 165.

Last time, the Welsh team of 191 athletes came home with three golds Kelly Morgan (badminton), Iwan Thomas (400m) and Desmond Davies (shooting).

Their strength in recent years has come on the track.
