Man U add to Reds' woes
Updated 28 April 2002, 11.05
Manchester United celebrate
As Liverpool's dreams are dented in the early match against Spurs on Saturday, the rest of the day's matches threw up some predictable results.

Ipswich 0-1 Man Utd

Manchester United added to Liverpool's woes with their 1-0 win over worried Ipswich Town.

Ipswich are in the relegation zone already.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored the winner, converting a penalty which many thought should not have been awarded.

Nistelrooy went down in the box when he was challenged by Titus Bramble.

Ipswich's best chance was when Marcus Bent headed the ball towards the goal - but it was wide of the mark.

Newcastle 3-1 West Ham

Newcastle had to chase West Ham for their win against the Hammers.

Jermain Defoe put West Ham in the lead with his great volley shot.

And there were further scary moments for the Magpies when Steve Lomas and Frederic Kanoute missed their chances.

Alan Shearer did the job once more for Newcastle, levelling the score with his shot four minutes before half-time.

Newcastle dominated the second-half. Lomana Tresor LuaLua scored from a rebound and Laurent Robert scored the third after the ball bounced off the post.

Middlesbrough 0-2 Chelsea

Carlton Cole foiled Boro's Mark Schwarzer and headed the Blues in front, in what could be seen as a warm-up for their FA Cup final game next Saturday.

The 18 year old was on the pitch instead of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who was nursing a calf injury.

The game was sealed with a Boudewijn Zenden goal.

Aston Villa 2-1 Southampton

Villa are still on target for a place in the Intertoto Cup after Darius Vassell scored twice.

The England striker's first came after a looping header then he doubled the lead after the break.

But the Saints hit back in the second-half when James Beattie scored.

Charlton 2-2 Sunderland

Sunderland didn't get the vital win they needed to keep them safe from relegation.

Jason Euell offered the first goal for Charlton after only 63 seconds.

But Sunderland hit back straight after the kick-off with a Kevin Kilbane shot.

A header from Kevin Phillips after a Jason McAteer free-kick gave Sunderland some breathing space.

But Charlton was having none of it and Kevin Lisbie athletically kicked in the equaliser.

Derby County 0-1 Leeds United

Derby are relegated and the bad news continued when Leeds' Lee Bowyer scored to ensure their seventh defeat in a row.

His goal came in the 16th minute after good work with Alan Smith. Although Derby had their chances, they failed to get on target.

Fulham 0-0 Leicester

Meanwhile Fulham's last match at Craven Cottage before its redeveloped finished with a disappointing no score draw.
