Beckham's dad Ted said: "He was very, very upset and he said he was in a lot of pain and that he was in plaster.

"He said he was more upset because of what games were coming up," he told GMTV.

He broke a metatarsal bone in his left foot during Manchester United's 3-2 Champions League win over Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday.

Irureta denied it was deliberate: "We didn't single Beckham out for special treatment," he said.

The vicious tackle came after 16 minutes from Argentinean Pedro Duscher.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "The game of football is about tackles and I think the player maybe had to go for it (the ball)."

Out for weeks

Becks is out of the game for six to eight weeks so he can rest before England's first World Cup game on 2 June against Sweden.

So he'll miss the rest of United's Premiership and Champions League matches.
