  England make steady start
Updated 22 March 2002, 18.52
England's Marcus Trescothick
England made a good start to the rain-affected second Test against New Zealand, reaching 92-2 when bad light stopped play on the second day.

After a frustrating first day - when rain meant no play at all - the Test finally started in the afternoon session in Wellington.

England tried to make up for the lost time when they started batting, with Marcus Trescothick in typically attacking form, crashing seven fours in his 37 before being caught out from a mistimed shot.

Result may be unlikely

Michael Vaughan had already lost his wicket at that point, leaving England in a fragile position, but captain Nasser Hussain and Mark Butcher saw the side through to the close.

Hussain was on 16 not out and Butcher on 24 not out when the match was stopped for the day, but with two days already gone a result may be unlikely.

That won't help New Zealand, because they are already 1-0 down in the three-Test series, and their injury-weakened team won't want to go into the final Test still behind.
