But he failed a drugs test.

In a statement on Thursday the IOC said: "Alain Baxter is disqualified from the men's alpine skiing slalom event."

Bronze to Austria

The bronze medal will now go to Benjamin Raich of Austria who finished fourth.

The bronze was the first skiing medal Britain had ever won.

But Baxter was found to have traces of a drug called methamphetamine in his body.

He said he hadn't taken the drug deliberately, claiming it was in a nasal stick used for colds.

But IOC's rules meant he was responsible for whatever was in his body.

He was supported by the British Olympic Association and the British Ski and Snowboard Federation.
