Updated 16 March 2002, 09.58
Hoggard has Astle caught behind after an amazing performance
England's cricketers have beaten New Zealand in the fourth test despite the home side hitting the fastest double century on record.

New Zealand's Nathan Astle hit 222 to make the visitors worry they might not win after all.

He hit 11 sixes and 28 fours in an amazing display and went from 100 to 200 in just 39 balls.

England breathed a sigh of relief when Astle was finally caught behind off Matthew Hoggard.

On Friday England had given the home side an almost impossible 550 to beat.

In the end they won by 98 runs

It was their first win in the opening Test of an overseas series for 10 years.

The second test gets underway in Wellington in a few days' time.
