  Queen starts historic Games relay
Updated 11 March 2002, 15.26
The Queen at the launch of the Commonwealth Games countdown
The Queen has kick-started the countdown to the Jubilee year Commonwealth Games by setting off the longest relay in history.

She handed the Manchester Games special baton to former athlete Sir Roger Bannister outside Buckingham Palace, surrounded by fireworks, balloons and music.

Roger Bannister was the first man ever to run a mile in less than four minutes.

Different people will take the baton on an incredible 58,000-mile relay around the world, passing through 23 Commonwealth countries.

It will end up back in the UK for the start of the Commonwealth Games on 25 July.

Stars who've already taken their turn in passing the baton include Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave, footballers Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best, hurdler Sally Gunnell, rugby players Lawrence Dallaglio and Austin Healey, actress Claire Sweeney and Eurovision singer Jessica Garlick.
