  Russian muggles play Quidditch
Updated 31 December 2001, 17.25
Harry and prepares for Quidditch
Harry Potter fans in Russia have invented their very own version of the breathtaking sport, Quidditch, usually played by wizards on broomsticks.

Fans everywhere have enjoyed reading and watching the magical Quidditch players in JK Rowling's books and the film, and now Russian muggles have turned it into a game played on the ground.

Piggy-backs

The Golden Snitch

Instead of broomsticks carrying the players, it's humans who give the seekers and keepers a ride on their shoulders!

And what about the Snitch? Well the ingenious Russians have created two versions of the winged golden prize using string and egg cups, one for younger players and the other for a more challenging game.

Players throw the ball into the air and catch it in the egg cup.

Harder

The second snitch is made from a rod with a ball attached to it by string. Players have to try and pierce the ball with the rod.

Quidditch scenes in the Potter film were filmed near Glen Coe, Glen Nevis and around Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan in Scotland.

And Moscow's first real Quidditch match was held last week in temperatures of -15 degrees, too cold even for wizards!
