Updated 17 December 2001, 17.06
Michael Owen is European Footballer of the Year
Liverpool's Michael Owen has won the European Footballer of the Year award, finishing ahead of Real Madrid's Raul and Bayern Munich's Olivier Kahn.

Owen was a key player for Liverpool as they won five trophies in the last 12 months, and he has scored 20 goals in 22 games so far this season.

1964 - Denis Law
1966 - Bobby Charlton
1968 - George Best
1978 - Kevin Keegan
1979 - Kevin Keegan
2001 - Michael Owen
Owen is only the sixth British player in the history of the award to take the prize, while David Beckham finished fourth.

The award is given by France Football magazine and is voted for by football journalists from all over Europe.

Owen beats Kahn again

It is strange that Kahn took third place, since he was in goal for Germany when Owen scored a hat-trick in England's famous 5-1 win in Munich.

For Raul it was his second top three finish in a major football award in the same day.

Earlier he saw teammate Luis Figo take the Fifa World Player of the Year award ahead of Beckham and himself.
