The Portugal captain finished second in the voting for the award last season, when French captain Zinedine Zidane was the victor.

Beckham was runner up for the second time in three years in the award voted for by the coaches of the world's national teams.

Third place went to Figo's Real Madrid teammate Raul.

Earlier in the cermony Paolo di Canio was given a Fifa fair play award for his actions in a game against Everton.

The West Ham forward decided to catch the ball when the opposition goalkeeper was lying injured on the floor, rather than shoot towards an empty net.
