Becks: Sports Personality of the Year
Updated 10 December 2001, 06.57
David Beckham is thrilled to have be Sports Personality of the Year
David Beckham has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The England captain beat off competition from Liverpool's Michael Owen and record-breaking yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur for the award.

Fact File
The winners
Sports Personality: David Beckham
Lifetime Achievement: Sir Alex Ferguson
Coach of the Year: Sven-Goran Eriksson
Team of the Year: Liverpool FC
Young Personality: Amy Spencer
Helen Rollason Award: Ellen MacArthur
Overseas Personality: Goran Ivanisevic
It's a huge honour because it's voted for by the fans.

It's a change of fortunes for Beckham: In 1998 he was very unpopular after he was sent off during a World Cup game against Argentina.

But he recently led England into next year's World Cup finals.

'It's amazing'

Accepting his award he said: "This award was voted for by fans and people in the country who watch the England and Man United teams play. That is who I thank for this award. It is amazing."

But he said the tension of waiting to find out if he'd won had given him a headache!

Meanwhile, retiring United manager Alex Ferguson won a special Lifetime Achievement award.

And Wimbledon champ Goran Ivanisevic was named Overseas Sports Personality.
