  World Cup TV deal agreed
Updated 18 October 2001, 14.48
World cup
The 2002 World Cup finals will be shown on British television after the BBC and ITV struck a deal.

The two broadcasters came to an agreement over rights with the German TV company Kirch.

Kirch had originally asked for at least 150m for permission to show the matches.

Fears for tournament

This led to fears the tournament, which is being held in Japan and South Korea, wouldn't be shown in the UK.

Peter Salmon

BBC director of sport Peter Salmon said: "We can now give our viewers the best seat in the house for the best football."

Althought the final price still hasn't been announced, the deal will also cover the 2006 tournament.
