  Beagle project 'needed more help'
Updated 02 November 2004, 09.53
Beagle 2 has been declared lost
An new investigation into why Beagle 2 was lost on Mars says it might have been more successful if the government had given the project more help.

The report, written by a committee of MPs, says the government should have given the probe more money earlier.

Beagle 2 was a robot specially designed to look for life on the red planet.

The team lost contact with it on 25 December 2003. Despite loads of attempts to find it, the robot wreck has never been located.

The investigation also suggested that because Beagle 2 was developed separately from Mars Express, the mothership that carried it through space, it was harder to co-ordinate the two machines.

But even though Beagle 2 didn't manage to complete it's mission the report said the time and money spent on the project wasn't a waste.
