TV and gaming 'bad for your eyes'
Updated 08 July 2004, 12.58
Playing games may be bad for your eyesight
Watching TV and playing computer games could be making children's eyesight bad according to some new research.

Scientists in Australia studied kids' eyes in Asia after more and more of them became short-sighted.

Some experts think your eyesight is decided when you are born, but others think young people's eyes get worse because of what they're looking at.

They think as eyes get more used to looking at things nearby, they change shape, so can't see things far away.

Experts at the Australian National University in Canberra looked at lots of different studies into eyesight, and decided the problems in Asia were because of lifestyle.

The problems there are so bad that finding people with good enough eyesight to do jobs like working in the police is getting difficult.

Short-sightedness is much more common in east Asia than anywhere else.

Experts are worried as kids spend more time indoors, on computers or watching telly, it could become a bigger problem here too.
