Sony plans rival to Apple's iPod
Updated 01 July 2004, 18.32
Sony is launching a rival to the iPod
One of the most popular gadgets of the last few years, the iPod, is getting a rival from Walkman inventors Sony.

They're launching a new cool gadget to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first ever personal stereo.

That was called the Walkman, and the name became so popular that soon everyone called their personal stereo a Walkman, even if it wasn't a Sony.

Now they're making a digital player which will be cheaper and smaller than an iPod, but have more room for songs.

Sony say it'll be 55 cheaper than the iPod and will be able to cram 3,000 more songs onto a smaller hard drive than the Apple machine.

The new machine will only be able to take songs online from the Sony site and won't be able to play songs stored in the MP3 format.

Sony has sold 340 million Walkmans during the past 25 years, including several million CD players.
