Hopes of malaria vaccine by 2010
Updated 15 October 2004, 17.45
 A mosquito
Scientists think they've made a huge breakthrough in creating a vaccine for the disease malaria, which is one of the world's biggest killers.

It's carried by mosquitoes and over a million children die from it each year.

The vaccine was used to protect 2,022 children in Mozambique and cut the risk of developing the disease by 58%.

Mosquitoes get the disease when they bite someone who already has it, they then pass it on to the next person that they bite.

Children in Africa

One in 10 people in the world have malaria and it kills more children than any other disease.

Scientists have been trying to find a cure or vaccine for years.

They have now announced that although they're not there yet, they have made a big breakthrough and hope to have one available by 2010.

The biggest challenge is finding a vaccine that will be affordable to everyone who needs it.

In the meantime doctors will continue to fight it however they can - malaria doesn't necessarily kill and can be treated if it's caught very early.
