Owners wait for first cloned pets
Updated 27 April 2004, 19.52
The world's first cloned pet cats are on the way
A US company is planning on handing over the world's first cloned pet cats with five owners waiting for them.

They've all handed over $50,000 to get a brand new version of a furry friend from company Genetic Savings & Clone.

The first kittens are due for delivery in November 2004, and three staff members are also having cats cloned.

The clones won't be exactly the same as the animals they are based on, with personalities and even some markings different from the originals.

The company were involved with a university who cloned the first cat, called Cc, who is now two years old.

Buyers are warned that the clones they get aren't a younger identical version of their old pet, but a similar version of the same animal.

Some people are already planning ahead, getting DNA from their current pets so they can recreate them when they die.
