Junk food might be an addiction
Updated 22 April 2004, 17.55
Pizza - an addiction?
People who say they are addicted to junk food might not be fibbing, US scientists have discovered.

They carried out brain scans on hungry people and found out that junk food sparked a similar reaction to the effect of drugs on addicts.

The fave food of the people taking part in the experiment included pizza, cheeseburgers, fried chicken and cake.

The findings might help the argument that junk food advertising is helping to drive the obesity problem in the US.

An estimated 30% of Americans are obese - which works out as men being about 17kg overweight and women being about 14kg overweight.

The scientists studied a group of 12 adults with an average age of 28.

They didn't eat for a day, then the experiment was carried out.
