Gaming may help kids hear better
Updated 02 April 2004, 09.05
Gaming could help kids hear
Playing on computer games could soon help people with hearing problems.

Experts think that playing specially-made games could help children and adults who have trouble hearing even when tests say there is nothing wrong.

Hearing the sounds sometimes isn't the problem, it's how the brain works out what's making the noise and where it's coming from.

Games could help because they're repetitive, which helps improve the way your brain works things out.

Now the scientists are planning on chatting with games experts to make the new games entertaining and fun.

The Medical Research Council plan to spend £12m on The Auditory Brain Study to try and make things better.

The 'brain hearing' problem is called auditory processing disorder (APD) which means working out what it is you're listening to.

The study will also look at the brain, ways to improve lip reading and helping people with implants in their ears.
