Maggots will be the latest treatment on their shelves. As gross as it seems, the creatures have proved effective at cleaning up infected wounds.
Patients used to have to go to hospital for maggot treatment but, thanks to the new scheme, they can now stay at home.
District nurses will apply the maggots and seal the wound, leaving them to feed on the infection for a few days.
The maggots leave the healthy part of a wound alone, devouring only the infected areas.
Research has shown that wounds treated like this heal quicker than when regular medicine is used.
Amputation
Up to 20,000 people have received the treatment so far.
In many cases, it has prevented the need for surgery or even amputation.
