  Smelly e-mails heading your way
Updated 19 February 2004, 17.04
E-mails could be replaced by e-smells
When e-mails arrive in the future it might not be a noisy ping that tells you about it, but a nice smell instead.

An internet company has come up with some new technology that will let people send smells over the internet.

The smells themselves aren't actually sent through the wires, instead you plug a machine into your computer that sends out a smell when it's told to.

E-mails would have information in them that would tell the machine to spray a smell into the air near the computer.

The machine, which is like a hi-tech air freshener, has around 20 smells which could be combined to make around 60 pleasant pongs.

It may also be used by advertising companies, who could send you a chocolate smell to try and convince you to buy their particular bar.

But buying the 'scent dome' isn't going to be cheap at around £250, and you'll need a high-speed broadband connection to make it work.
