Action needed to save coral reefs
Updated 16 February 2004, 13.25
Fishing is damaging the coral
More than 1,100 sea experts want the UN to do something to stop the destruction of the world's deep-sea corals.

Much of the damage is caused by a special type of fishing net that drags along the bottom of the ocean.

It's really good at catching the valuable fish that live in the coral, but wrecks the coral at the same time.

The scientists want to try and work out a better way of fishing the reefs, because if the corals are destroyed there won't be any fish left either.

Scientists believe banning the use of the deep trawl nets is the only way to make things better.

Some of the corals can be as tall as trees, and have been found to be almost 2,000 years old.

They take years to grow again if they are damaged or destroyed.
