  Scientists listen out for Beagle
Updated 24 January 2004, 11.50
Beagle 2
British scientists are attempting to contact their lost Beagle 2 Mars lander - nearly two weeks after they last tried to get in touch.

They've held off trying to reach the probe in the hope that it'll be forced into an emergency communication mode, where it keeps its transmitter on.

Beagle's mothership, Mars Express, will then have a better chance of hearing a signal from the landing site.

Meanwhile, US scientists say it will take weeks to fix their probe, Spirit.

Spirit stopped working properly on Wednesday. It managed to send back a weak signal on Friday.

Scientists are now analysing the information it provided to try to fix the probe's problems.

British scientists don't even know if Beagle landed safely on Mars. If they don't hear from it by the middle of next month, it's likely to be written off.
