Spirit rolls into action on Mars
Updated 20 January 2004, 08.07
The tracks left by Spirit in the Martian soil
The US Mars rover Spirit has begun driving around the red planet, and has found a big rock to start studying.

The three-metre drive took Spirit 30 minutes to complete, although it did make a few stops to take some photos.

The drive took it close to a rock that Nasa have called Adirondack, and the rover will now examine the rock, working out what it's made of.

A second US rover, Opportunity, is scheduled to land on Mars on Saturday, on the other side of the planet.

Work on the rock will start on Tuesday and will take a few days, and scientists hope it will tell them how the rock was made.

Nasa mission manager Mark Adler said afterwards: "We went for a little Sunday drive."
