Big year for computer game sales
Updated 11 January 2004, 12.50

Fifa 2004 was the year's biggest seller
Gamers and people buying Christmas presents snapped up more computer games in 2003 than in any other year.

A mega £1.26 billion was spent on games, and if you include the consoles too, it's more than £2 billion.

Fifa 2004 was the biggest game of the year, selling more than 600,000 copies in the 10 weeks before Christmas, making it a "double platinum" game.

Another 15 games were also really popular, each selling more than 300,000 copies in the same 10 weeks.

The people who organise the chart the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) said it was gaming's biggest ever year.

Their director general Roger Bennett said: "The UK video games industry sales have been on the rise for the past 20 years.

"It topped the £2 billion mark for the first time in 2002 and this year, once the final figures for all hardware are compiled, will see that dynamic trend continue."
