  Moon mission excites space bosses
Updated 10 January 2004, 13.53
The US wants to put a man on Mars
Science experts at Nasa are getting excited about new US plans to send people to the Moon and Mars.

President George Bush is expected to announce the new ideas next week in an important speech, which will include plans for a space base on the Moon.

He wants to make US space exploration popular again, after the Challenger shuttle disaster in 2003.

Not everyone is happy about the plans though, with some saying the missions aren't worth the millions they'll cost.

The US has already sent a probe to Mars
Any manned mission to Mars - where Nasa successfully landed a probe - is at least 10 years away yet.

Nasa would have to develop loads of new technology to get to Mars and back, and it's hoped some of that technology can be used in other areas too.

Brand new space missions are often very popular in the US, and some people are wondering if President Bush is talking about the new plans because they're well liked.

If he wants to be president for another four years he has to win a Presidential Election in November, and the more popular he is the better his chance of winning.
