US hoping to send a man to Mars
Updated 09 January 2004, 07.33
The US is hoping to send a man to Mars
The US is expected to announce next week that it hopes to send the first ever manned mission to Mars.

President George Bush will reveal the aim in a speech, as well as plans to send people to the moon again, and even put a permanent space base there.

But it won't happen soon, with a manned Mars mission at least 10 years away.

Experts expected an exciting space mission to be revealed soon, as Mr Bush begins his campaign to be re-elected as US president in November 2004.

The mission follows Nasa's recent success at landing the first of two probes on the red planet.

To get to Mars would take at least six months, unlike a trip to the moon which takes just three days.

Nasa could use the moon base to test some of the technology it would later use on a mission to Mars.

Mr Bush is also expected to announce that the space agency and the US military will begin to work more closely together.
