But that could all be over as one mobile company has come up with a way to get a signal in the longest tunnels.
They put an aerial at the start of a tunnel, aiming inside. Passengers could use their phones throughout its entire 847 metre length with no problems.
Tests are now planned for the Channel Tunnel and on board ferries.
They will also test aerials in three other tunnels in the UK, including one which is two and a half miles long.
Orange say: "Dropped calls and connections are frustrating," and they hope to bring them to an end.
