'Bluejacking' lets you text for free
Updated 05 December 2003, 17.05
You need a flash phone to bluejack
Texting your pals for free sounds like a great idea, and a new craze called bluejacking lets you do just that, but it's not all it appears.

You can only send messages to people within a certain distance, and no-one knows that it's you who sent it.

You also need a Bluetooth phone to be able to send messages this way.

Because the message doesn't carry your name or mobile number it's fab for playing jokes on people, but it also means people can trick you too.

Fact File
Bluejacking tips
Only bluejack if you're with a friend
Don't put your name or phone number in a bluejack
Don't use bluejack to bully people
Don't describe yourself in a bluejack
If you don't want to be bluejacked, either turn off the Bluetooth function on your phone or make your phone 'undiscoverable'
The technology is supposed to be used to help people send info from their phones and laptops to computers without wires, but now has a new use too.

Until now it's been more expensive phones that have Bluetooth technology, but as the handsets get cheaper, bluejacking is sure to be on the rise too.
