  Non-green schools waste millions
Updated 26 November 2003, 10.43
Make our planet greener!
Schools are wasting millions of pounds each year because they haven't done their homework on the environment.

Figures published on Wednesday by Eco-Schools show they are spending £459 million each year on electricity, water, clearing up litter and stationery.

But with a few changes these bills could be cut and the environment could be protected.

They say that protecting the environment has health benefits too.

Children who walk to school will get fitter, this is particularly important since the latest figures show that one in three children is overweight.

Britain already has 4,500 Eco-Schools and they have done loads of good work over the last few years.

One school in Belfast recycled 1,000 cans as part of its effort and a school near Manchester transformed their grubby grounds into a nature reserve for everyone to enjoy.

A spokesperson for Eco-Schools said: "When you talk about the environment, people often think about global warming and massive issues they feel they can do nothing about.

"Yet being environmentally-friendly is as much about using both sides of a piece of paper or turning the light off as you leave the room."
