Giant food made dinosaurs so big
Updated 22 October 2003, 20.26
Dinosaurs were massive in the Cretaceous period
Dinousaurs were such big creatures because the food they were snacking on was massive too, a new report says.

Scientists have worked out that plants grew much faster millions of years ago, so there was enough food for loads of plant-eating animals.

There were so many of them that there was plenty of food for giant meat-eating dinosaurs too.

The biggest animal that has ever lived, the Argentinosaurus, was around then and weighed around 100 tonnes.

A scientist from North Carolina State University in the US grew plants like those found in dinosaur times in conditions like those millions of years ago.

She found they grew three times quicker than those around now, which is why there would have been so many plant-eating or herbivore dinosaurs.

Back in the Cretaceous period herbivores that weighed as much as a tonne each lived in giant herds.

And other herbivores and meat-eaters - carnivores - wandered around weighing around 10 tonnes each.
