  Microsoft closes free chatrooms
Updated 14 October 2003, 14.08
Microsoft's chatrooms are closing
Microsoft is closing loads of its free, unmoderated chatrooms on Tuesday.

Chatrooms in the UK, Europe, Middle East, Latin America and most of Asia are all being shut to help keep you lot safer when you're surfing.

A number of children's charities said the decision was a good one when it was announced in September, but not everyone agrees.

Some fear children who can no longer use their fave Microsoft chatrooms will start using less safe ones instead.

Chatrooms on MSN's other global sites will either be supervised - or moderated - by an adult 24 hours a day, or you'll need a credit card to use them.

The chatrooms were closed because of worries that some adults were pretending to be children in them so they could meet and sometimes hurt kids.
