  Text 'addiction' on the increase
Updated 12 October 2003, 16.26
Young people are texting more than ever
Doctors are warning that more and more people are literally addicted to sending text messages.

Addiction specialists at The Priory say that 'text addicts' have mood swings and even feel sick if they have their phones taken away from them.

The doctors think this is all part of a growing problem of 'behavioural' addictions, which include spending too much time online and on the phone.

It's thought these addictions come from people trying to escape other problems.

Fact File
Top reasons to text
Send a greeting, like Happy Birthday (28%)
Arrange/cancel a date (16%)
Get sports/news updates (7%)
Flirting (7%)
Contact an ex (4%)

Nearly one billion texts are sent each day.

Some teachers have started complaining that texts are damaging your ability to use proper English.

One girl was in trouble with her teachers because she handed in home work written in text-speak, and they couldn't understand a word!
