Hunt starts for the Himalayan yeti
Updated 12 August 2003, 09.10
There's been rumours about the Yeti for years
Explorers have set off on a six-week mission to find the mysterious Himalayan yeti.

Many people claim to have spotted the huge creature in the Himalayas in Nepal.

Rumours about the yeti, also known as the abominable snowman, have been around for years.

No proof

Since the 1920s, explorers have reported seeing a huge, hairy creature in mountain areas.

But there's still no proof he exists.

Now a 14-strong team of Japanese explorers have set out to track yeti down once and for all.

'I'll shake hands with him'

They've even got special heat-seeking cameras, so they reckon the yeti can't possibly hide from them.

Team leader Yoshiteru Takahashi reckons he's seen yeti's footsteps before, and he's definitely real.

"I'll take pictures and shake hands if I meet him," he said. "But we will not capture it."
